Mobilizing Unified Strategies for Trade Negotiations and the Need for a Philippine Trade Representative Office

The advocacy of multi-sectoral groups on the matter of Philippine capacity for negotiations in international trade has reached fever-pitch with the Trade Advocacy Group (TAG) successfully galvanizing support in the House of Representatives for the creation of a Philippine Trade Representative Office (PTRO). This proposed office tracks and models the powers and functions of the US Trade Representative Office.

As part of the AIM Policy Center’s interest in creating multi-sectoral dialogues in the area of international relations that affect business interests, it is pleased to invite you, together with the TAG, to a public forum, “Mobilizing Unified Strategies for Trade Negotiations and the Need for a Philippine Trade Representative Office” on 01 June 2009, 12:30pm to 4:00pm at SGV Hall, 3/F AIM Conference Center Manila, Benavidez cor. World Competitiveness Yearbook 2009 Results: A Look at Philippine Performance Amidst the Global Crisis

2009 marks the 13th year of the Asian Institute of Management Policy Center’s (APC) engagement as a Partner-Institute of the Switzerland-based International Institute for Management Development (IMD) for the World Competitiveness Yearbook (WCY). The yearbook is reputed as being the worldwide reference point on the competitiveness of nations, ranking and analyzing how an economy manages the totality of its resources and competencies to increase the prosperity of its population. Over the years, it has been a key reference of investors, analysts, and decision-makers in assessing country performance.

Social Market Economy: A Viable Development Option for the Philippines?

The world is in the midst of a gripping financial crisis. Many think that because of the failures of the dominant economic system, a rethink of the Philippine development model is in order. AIM-DOE Collaborates to Improve the Energy Sector

The Department of Energy (DOE) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Asian Institute of Management (AIM) at a ceremony held on May 13, 2009 at the Lopez Gallery of the AIM Campus in Makati. The MOU signatories were Energy Secretary Angelo T. Reyes, AIM President Francis Estrada, and AIM Policy Center Executive Director Prof. Ma. Lourdes Sereno.

Recent Developments in International Investments Law:A Lecture-Forum featuring Prof. Dr. Dr. Rudolf Dolzer

Bilateral investment treaties and regional economic partnership agreements are becoming more evident in Southeast Asian countries. At the same time, the legal frameworks surrounding the treaties are evolving considerably. There is then a need to be familiar with the developments and trends especially since these treaties directly influence the economic development goals of the countries involved.

As part of AIM Policy Center’s interest in looking at economic integration in ASEAN and Europe-Asia relationship, it convened representatives from the from the legal profession, the academe and government for a lecture-forum entitled “Recent Developments in International Investments Law featuring Prof. Dr. Dr. Rudolf Dolzer”. This is in cooperation with the Konrad Adenaeur Stiftung, the Philippine Board of Investments and the UP College of Law. Prof. Dr. Dr. Rudolf Dolzer is one of the world’s best-known international law experts, a German Constitutional Court expert, and Director of the Institute for International Law - University of Bonn.

The 2008 Global Accountability Report Launch at AIM

The results of this year’s assessment reveal a clustering of overall accountability capabilities scores around the 70% mark, indicating that an organisation has accountability policies and systems in place that meet only some good practice principles. This is the floor, not the ceiling, of accountability capabilities. If global organisations are to be part of the solution to global challenges, there needs to be a step change in their approaches to accountability. They need to start implementing the more challenging accountability reforms which truly empower external stakeholders to hold an organisation to account.

The AIM Policy Center is the Philippine partner of One World Trust for the 2008 Global Accountability Report. The Report was launched in February 12, 2009 at the AIM-WB Global Distance Learning Center.

Lecture-Forum on Peace, Conflict Transformation and the Global Financial Crisis

The AIM Policy Center, in cooperation with the Konrad Adenauer Foundation and the Philippine Council of Evangelical Churches (PCEC), convened representatives from the peacemakers and development sector, academe, and government for a lecture-forum on “Peace, Conflict Transformation and the Global Financial Crisis” last February 6, 2009 at the AIM Conference Center Manila, Makati City.

The lecture-forum featured Professor Johan Galtung, a Norwegian sociologist who is regarded as the father of peace and conflict studies. He founded Transcend International, a peace and development network working “to bring about a more peaceful world by using action, education/training, dissemination and research to handle conflicts with empathy, non-violence and creativity.” Professor Galtung has served as intercessor and negotiator in several international conflicts, as well as conflicts between governments and opposition groups for fifty years now.
